About SalaryCalc

What this site is

SalaryCalc is a collection of 22 free calculators for people who work in Canada and the small employers who pay them: adding up hours and breaks, checking overtime, working out Ontario public holiday and vacation pay, converting hourly wages to salaries, and estimating sales tax, CPP, EI and mortgage payments.

It is built and maintained by one software engineer based in Ontario. There is no company behind it, no premium tier and no newsletter. The site is funded by advertising.

How the calculators are checked

  • The formula is on the page. Each calculator explains the arithmetic it performs and includes a worked example you can reproduce by hand.
  • Rules are cited, not paraphrased from memory. Tools that depend on legislation (for example the Ontario Employment Standards Act, 2000) link to the government page the rule comes from and show the date the figures were last verified.
  • Automated tests. Every calculation function has unit tests, including edge cases (zero hours, overnight shifts, the 44-hour overtime boundary, five-year vacation threshold) that run before any change is published.
  • Honest scope. 4 tools implement Ontario rules only and say so. We add another province when its rules have been verified from the official source — we do not apply Ontario figures to the rest of Canada and hope for the best. Older tax estimators that have not yet been re-verified for the current year carry an “under review” notice.

What the calculators are not

They are not legal, payroll, tax or financial advice, and they cannot see your employment contract, collective agreement or individual circumstances. Use them to understand how a number is built and to spot something that looks wrong on a pay stub; confirm anything that matters with the official source linked on the page, your payroll department, or a qualified professional. See the Terms of Service.

Privacy and advertising

The numbers you enter stay in your browser. Cloudflare Web Analytics counts visits, Microsoft Clarity shows us how pages are used (with inputs masked), and Google AdSense serves the ads. The Privacy Policy spells out exactly what is collected and how to opt out of personalised ads.

Found a mistake? Need a calculator?

Corrections are the most useful thing you can send. If a result disagrees with your pay stub, the official government calculator or a rule you can cite, use the contact page and include the inputs you used. Requests for new calculators are welcome too; the ones we prioritise are the ones people actually search for and that we can verify against an official source.
