Limitations

  • Treats every break you enter as unpaid. If your employer pays breaks, enter 0.
  • Does not apply overtime or minimum-wage rules — use the overtime calculator or the Ontario gross pay checker for that.

Results are estimates for general information and are not legal, tax, payroll or financial advice. Employment contracts, collective agreements and individual circumstances can change what you are owed.

How the hours are calculated

paid minutes = (end − start) − unpaid break
(add 24 h if the end time is before the start time)
total hours = Σ paid minutes ÷ 60
gross pay = total hours × hourly rate

Worked example

ShiftIn → outBreakPaid time
Mon9:00 → 17:3030 min8h 00m
Tue8:45 → 16:1530 min7h 00m
Fri night22:00 → 06:0045 min7h 15m
Total = 22h 15m = 22.25 h × $20.00$445.00

Break rules differ by jurisdiction

This tool makes no assumptions about which breaks you are owed. In Ontario the Employment Standards Act requires an unpaid 30-minute eating period so that nobody works more than five hours in a row (it can be split into two shorter breaks by agreement), and coffee breaks are not required at all (ESA guide: hours of work). Other provinces and countries set their own rules. Enter the breaks you actually took and were not paid for.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert minutes to decimal hours for a timesheet?

Divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes = 0.25, 30 minutes = 0.50, 45 minutes = 0.75, 20 minutes = 0.33. So 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours. This calculator does the division for you and rounds to two decimals.

Is my lunch break paid?

Usually not. In Ontario, for example, the 30-minute eating period required after 5 consecutive hours is unpaid unless your contract says otherwise, while short coffee breaks where you must stay at work must be paid. Check your own province or contract — this calculator simply subtracts whatever break minutes you enter.

How does the calculator handle a night shift that ends the next day?

If the end time is earlier than the start time (for example 22:00 to 06:00) the calculator assumes the shift crossed midnight and counts 8 hours. It marks those rows as “overnight”.

Can I enter times like 9am and 5:30pm?

Yes. 9am, 9:00, 09:00, 0900, 5:30pm and 17:30 are all accepted.
